Rear End Clunk Noise Diagnosed at Stealership! Update for the Z Crew!

Hi Z Crew,

I started a thread on the rear end clunk noise when I shift into reverse when the car is cold.

I took it in to the stealership and went into the shop with the foreman and have been told that on the SRT8's, the hardware that secures the drive shaft to the diff sometimes gets worn out and when the whole car is cold and you put it into reverse there is a metal clunk noise as it torques itself tight into gear?

This is a repair being done under warranty on Monday, so I will let you know if it in fact rectified the concern.

Just wanted to keep you updated on the facts as I'm being told them to be by the stealership.

What ever. I have had vehicles with even more power than an SRT and never had a problem with that part. The yoke at the front end of the drive shaft has given me lots of problems. The cars that I have had with more power than and SRT were not all they were cracked up to be either. They would go most any direction except straight under heavy power.

Subscribed. Just curious as to what the solution will be be for fixing the "clunk", and any other findings.
Hi HEMIPHIL - the stealership told me that they have to replace all the fastening hardware on the back side of the drive shaft where it connects to the diff.

Hi Check6x - The SRT8 has no traditional yoke for the drive shaft - at the front & rear of the shaft are very large and thick rubber isolators that then get connected to the rear of the transmission and the diff.

This set up is similar to that of high end BMW's and Mercedes (SRT8 is essentially a bit of a Mercedes as it shares some goodies in common) - with the power of these cars it is prudent to transfer said power with a smoother transition, hence the use of this set up as compared to a traditional rear wheel drive drive shaft yoke set up.

Regardless, I paid a top dollar for my extended factory warranty and I will milk the s%#t out of it :smileup:

I already got a new key fob, new VES DVD player and monitor, new Alpine head unit, new NAV disc and a few other minor things - and yes, I am that type of customer that everyone loves to hate with a passion.

I am the pickiest SOB when it comes to my cars - my mechanice I have been going to for over eight years knows me so well that only him and one other senior mechanic will even open my hood.

The whole shop knows me and I'm cool with all of them, but they all know how I am as does my detailer (bastard probably has a hate on for me, but I pay top cash and get a top job).

I see that you have an SRT8 so you probably already know how the shaft is connected - my bad so disregard :)
