To those with big systems...

I currently have a 12" sub in my car, and I'm considering adding another one. The last time I had a pair of 12's in a car, it was way back when I had an Eclipse. I didn't have anything insulated with Dynomat or anything similar, and over time it caused all kinds of rattles and eventually loosened up my sunroof to the point of hopping up and down when the bass hit.

I know using some Dynomat would solve a lot of this, but I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues of rattling things loose in their 300's. Seems like they're pretty well insulated, but I figured I'd ask out of curiosity more than anything else...thanks!

i will second the trunk lid and also the support behind the rear bumper cover.

So far i have used 100 sqft of fatmat and will prob use 100 more as soon as the spring comes around i still need to do from the rear seats forward, the roof, and the doors but as for right now i dont have any rattles i have 2 layers on the trunk lid and also use 2 cans of foam in the lid and absolutely no rattles at all i also had to do twp layers on the rear deck

so just take your time and do it right the first time and you will be fine

how big of a system are you going to be putting in?

What we do is make a template out of mdf that fits snugly behind the seats.

Then router out the opening for your speaker box.

When done correctly, the only thing that rattles is your teeth.

Here is another car we did...

Looks great...thanks for posting them up! I ended up putting a couple 12's in my car last night, and I really like how things turned out. Unfortunately, the trunk rattles like CRAZY outside of the car...so, I guess when the weather improves I'll have a Dynomat project.

By the way, does anyone know of cheaper alternatives to Dynomat?

If you ever decide to turn your enclosure around, remember to seal off the soundwaves by making a board to force all the bass waves through the car and not bounce around the enclosure.

You can achieve excellent bass with zero rattle by firing them forward...

but most people just fire them toward the trunk lid and they get the bass they desire but with side effects...lol

I sort of disagree with Wes, I have a set up with mine facing forward (into the cabin) and an MDF/Fiberglass panel completely sealing it off, and my trunk still rattles like theres no tomorrow

What kind of dampening do you have? I'm puzzled that you have your subs running into your vehicle and sealed off that your trunk would rattle?

I have done several systems w forward-firing subs w no rattle.

My system is 3-10's in a tri-faced enclosure w the 2 outside 10's firing at a 45 degree angle.

The top and bottom are extended mdf panels and my trunk has 3 layers os Stinger Roadkill.

You could put a cup of coffee on my lid and it wouldn't spill (I hate trunk rattle) but inside your teeth rattle.

Here is a pic...

Personally I love second skin, great product in my opinion. Wes very nice enclosure!!! Not to take over the thread or anything, but I'm glad this topic got brought up because I have heard a lot of horror stories about the trunks rattling like crazy in the 300's. I am preparing myself for my build in april. I'll be throwing 3.5k watts to a single, fully loaded, Fi BTL. I already know its gonna rattle even if i put multiple layers of sound deadening material on.

If that's rms, there isn't enough sound deadening in California to stop the rattle!

Actually sound dampening doesn't stop rattle, it changes the rattle to a non-perceptive frequency.

Instead of the loud rattle of metal, you hear a very low rumble by changing the properties of the metal.

Just thought I'd inform a little from what I've been taught.

my trunk and rear bumper rattel like crazy i should put some fatmat or something in it
It doesn't take that much to make a huge difference. As long as you put it in the right places, 1 box will kill alot of that.

didn't read all the posts, so forgive me if i repeat something said...first off, the license plate and bumper cover rattle to ****, regardless if you fatmatted/dynamatted the trunk area perfectly...what i did was i went to home depot/lowe's/whatever and bought a roll of the insulation that goes around heating/cooling vents in houses, i then pulled the rear bumper cover off...i put a layer or two on the metal bumper...between the metal bumper and the bumper cover, there is a black piece of plastic that supports the cover (basically where all the rattling came from), so i also put a few layers of the insulation between that piece of plastic and the bumper cover...when i went to go put it back on, it was a lot harder to put back on, but eventually fit. also put a layer or two of fatmat behind my license plate. that killed off ALL the rattling from the rear end from what i noticed.

also...if you do fatmat/dynamat the trunk...don't cover the black vents in the back...someone told me to, guess what happens? car turns into a vacuum...good times

edit: to put that insulation on, i used spray on adhesive to make sure it didn't come off

That's good input! If you take your time and do it right, you can "virtually" eliminate the rattles.
And as I said before, the deadening material, whether Dynamat, Roadkill or Fatmat etc... will change that high pitched annoying sound to a lower freq almost inaudible sound...
